CANAL DE GARONNE / CANAL DES DEUX MERS
The two canals together create the 433km long Canal des Deux Mers (Two Seas Canal) and it is possible to cycle all the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea on signposted cycle routes. This is a fantastic way to discover this beautiful, and still little known, part of France. It is mainly flat and therefore a very accessible route for all levels of cyclist.
Many people start in Bordeaux and use the Roger Lapebie bike path to join the canal in La Réole. This converted train line takes cyclists all the way from Bordeaux to Sauveterre de Guyenne on a beautiful traffic free path through rolling countryside. There is then just a short section on roads between Sauveterre and La Réole.
A lot of previous customers have biked from Bordeaux to Toulouse and have all loved their trip. It is a really great way to visit the area and definitely gives a sense of achievement at the end.

Clare and Jean-Pierre
In the summer of 2017 Jean-Pierre and I received our first guests for our new cycling holidays company 'Cycle South West France'. This was a very exciting moment, as with all new businesses, but also because it showed an idea that we had had for many years finally coming to fruition.
I first moved to Lot-et-Garonne in 2008 for a year as part of my studies for a degree in French. I fell in love with the area, met Jean Pierre, and after heading back to the UK to finish my studies and work, I knew I would eventually move back to this beautiful part of the world.
Lot-et-Garonne is a fantastic area, there is so much to see, and much quieter than the more touristy Bordeaux or the Dordogne. For me, this makes Lot-et-Garonne the perfect 'slightly-off-the-beaten-track ' destination. There are beautiful landscapes, rivers for kayaking, quiet back roads and the Canal de Garonne for biking, fantastic south of France weather, and not to mention delicious local wine.
Jean-Pierre and I have always loved sports, generally being active and outdoorsy and the area lends itself to this lifestyle. Back in 2008 we had already started talking about how it would be great to set up a business in tourism in the area, particularly cyclo-tourism as we both felt there was so much potential.
So after working in a corporate job in London for a few years after graduating, and spending too many weekends waiting in airports for a flight to France, in 2014 I decided to take the plunge and move back.
I now run Cycle South West France - or 'Cycles Sud-Ouest' as we are known locally - in Lot-et-Garonne.
We are based in Buzet-sur-Baise, a pretty little village right next to the Canal de Garonne. Jean Pierre grew up here and knows the area inside out. He always knows the right person to talk to or the best place to visit.
Cycles Sud-Ouest is based on the desire to show people this beautiful area, but in an affordable way, using Jean-Pierre's local knowledge, and my enthusiasm, to create circular itineraries and customised cycling holidays for people of all abilities.
This is a very new venture for us, it is very exciting, and has been a huge learning curve. We have loved every minute of it and are really enthusiastic for what the future will bring.
David & Fran - Biked from Bordeaux to Toulouse in 2019
we are back in Australia now, but wanted to make contact and thank you very much for your service. We really enjoyed our bike ride to Toulouse and found our bicycle hire experience with you very positive. The itinerary that you recommended and list of accommodations you provided was very helpful and we found all of the accommodations good.
All in all it was a fantastically positive experience and we are looking forward to our next opportunity to do something like that in France again!
Best wishes and thanks again
Richard & Sandy Hill - 1 week bike hire, delivery to their gîte in Aiguillon June 2017
The bicycles made our holiday. Sandy preferred hers to her one at home.
Cannot fault your service and the care you took to ensure that everything was as it should be.
My thanks to you and your partner.
We are planning a return trip next year and so we will be in touch again.
My best regards
Jenny Nutter & Jennifer Sinclair - 6 day cycling break July 2016
We organised a 6 day cycling break for Jenny & Jennifer incorporating a variety of rides both flat and hilly ranging between 20 and 45km. They visited the pretty towns of Nérac, Mas d'Agenais and Vianne, went kayaking, had a tour/tasting at Domaine Calbo and did plenty of relaxing by the pool. They very kindly said the following of their stay:
"[the trip] exceeded our very high expectations - the highlight of our trip to France"
Jenny & Jennifer booked the accommodation for their stay on AirBnB and very kindly left us this lovely review:
"We spent 6 nights at Clare and Jean-Pierre's place in the gorgeous village of Buzet. The hosts were very friendly, welcoming and helpfully bilingual.
The house is beautiful, very bright and comfortable, with a large kitchen which is fully equipped for self catering. Our bedrooms were spacious with great wifi signal and best of all opened up onto a joint balcony overlooking the back garden. We had our own bathroom which was perfect, clean and equipped with the little extras.
We loved spending time in the garden in the chill out area as well as in the fabulous pool. Buzet is a fantastic location, perfect for our 6 days of cycling through the French countryside, along the canal and visiting other pretty villages nearby (we did it all by bike and didn't have a car).
Clare has bikes available to rent and can give advice on some great itineraries (see her website: www.cyclesouthwestfrance.com.) Ask about the ride which incorporates a visit and tasting at a local winery with Thierry!
Buzet itself is small however has a great Spar shop which we used for groceries for our 6 days, a bakery with the best croissants we had in France and 4 restaurants with our favourite one being on the corner, overlooking the canal.
Overall, we thought this was the perfect experience to get the local insight while being great value for money. We'll be back again next year!"
Thanks girls - we are looking foward to having you back sometime!
"Taste of Toulouse offers English-speaking food tours and other delicious adventures. Experience the Marché Victor Hugo on Wednesday and Friday mornings!"
SOME ADVICE FROM A PREVIOUS CUSTOMER
"Here are some of the highlights of our trip and recommendations.
-first the pannier bags are essential. We were able to use them and tie our backpacks on top. Given the heat that was so important but I think in any situation it would just be easier and more comfortable.
-in no particular order these were our must see stops. Bordeaux wine country especially Chateau Malromé, they do a wonderful wine tasting and a tour of the home which was Henri Toulouse Latrec's mother's home. The tour was amazing.
Revel, it's lake just to the North and Soreze are completely worth 2 days. We stayed in the mountains to bike to carcassonne which was a little hilly but completely worth it, the views and little towns were charming
Agen was a charming city with great food and the canal goes over the river which is a really neat sight.
- mosaic is a must see town
- Toulouse is a great city with fun activities
-Airbnb was essential to us and we were able to book the night before. If you are looking for places they were perfect. Key is wifi to book next spot.
- always be on the lookout for water in each town. City center parks and statues usually had water.
-for relaxed biking 40 kilometers a day allowed for relaxed speed and frequent stops.
- the canal to Toulouse was good but went downhill after that. Canal riding is fun for awhile but it is fun to get off and go off in the countryside. I would recommend the canal section from langon to Marmonde it was the most beautiful section
-canal was often the easiest way to get into the cities.
-maps me was an essential tool for navigation. Trust it even when it seems to be taking you through a corn field.
-booking last minute was fine for us until we got to the coast i would recommend booking your airbnb's for the coast well in advance"
